Facultad de Enfermería

The Faculty of Nursing of the University of Murcia, previously called the University School of Nursing, was created in 1991 as a result of a collaborative agreement between the University of Murcia and the National Institute of Health (on which depended the now extinct "Virgen de la Arrixaca" School of Nursing) and the University of Murcia with the Autonomous Community of Murcia (on which depended the School of the Autonomous Community, approved by local government on 7 May 1990 and ratified by the Social Council of the same. As a result of the fusion of these two schools Nursing Studies began in the 1991/1992 academic year in the School of Nursing of the University of Murcia in accordance with the respective agreements (Official State Bulletin, BOE, 12 October, 1991).

Subsequently, in accordance with the Interuniversity Board of the province of Murcia (Región de Murcia) (Official Bulletin of the Región de Murcia of 29 July, BORM 3/8/2010), and in line with directives of the European Higher Education Area the School of Nursing took on the status of a faculty in its own right, the Faculty of Nursing of the University of Murcia.

The Faculty of Nursing aims for its students to fulfil their self-learning potential and capacity to solve problems.  A careful blend of theoretical classes that avoid inter-subject repetition and sufficient time for other activities directed at learning attitudes and skills – from consulting the bibliography to the correct application of nursing care. The institutional objectives for the training of future nursing professionals involve maintaining the university rank of faculty, while respecting the health needs of the population in accordance with the philosophy of the profession.

Through its nature and character, the main aims of the Nursing Faculty of the University of Murcia are to train future professionals, foster research, and broaden the diffusion of scientific knowledge related with the profession in university and health care-related settings in order to increase knowledge, enable collaboration with clinical professionals and educate the population at large in health matters.

Clinical practice is provided through an agreement between the University of Murcia and the Murcia Health Service concerning the training of students studying nursing degrees and the development of research in the field of Health Sciences (BORM nº 88 of 18 April 2016).

Besides the above agreement the Nursing Faculty has collaborative agreements with a variety of Health Institutions of the province, private clinics, and mutual accident associations, and professional associations.

The Nursing Faculty enables post-graduate training in the School of Practical Nursing which imparts courses and encourages study in a wide variety of fields. Since the academic year 2009-2010 it has been possible to study for the Master’s Degree in Health, Women and Care, completion of which enables the holder to undertake doctoral studies.  It is also possible to study different lines for the Health Sciences doctorate in the International Doctorate School of the University of Murcia.

The Faculty of Nursing carries out its teaching responsibilities in the installations of the University of Murcia but will shortly move to its own facilities in the new Health Sciences Campus in El Palmar, on the outskirts of the city of Murcia.
