Cognitive assistants are software agents augmenting human cognitive skills. Today they are ubiquitous, and omnipresent, often integrated with hardware and embedded software systems. Research in the area of pervasive computing and ambient intelligence aims to make use of context information to allow devices or applications behave in a context-aware, thus "intelligent" way. Context-aware systems have been studied in several fields and developed for over 30 years. In the talk we will focus on systems implemented with the use of mobile devices such as smartphones. In such dynamic systems a number of challenges need to be addressed. Today, such systems should be personalized, and use wearable devices and ambient intelligence technologies to be constantly available to the user. The context-aware paradigm provides means for the development of such systems. In the talk we will present our recent results in this area including new knowledge representation, reasoning methods and tools. Affective Computing (AfC) is a field of study that puts interest in the design and description of systems that are able to collect, interpret, and process emotional states. In our work on AfC we focus on wearable sensors for physiological monitoring which should allow for developing ubiquitous affective systems. We argue, that human-centric cognitive assistants should be able to detect and interpret changes of emotional state of the users. To this goal we propose to combine to computing approaches: affective computing and context-aware systems.

Societal and legal challanges for AI and intelligent systems – the need for eXplainable AI (XAI) and liability

In this talk we give on overview of selected classic AI approaches, including symbolic AI, computational intelligence, as well as machine learning. Moreover, we explore different aspects of building intelligent systems to consider how they are used and embedded in our world. Based on this introduction we consider number of societal challenges regarding development of AI systems. This includes the way how the systems are built, their purpose, as well as the designers. We emphasize the underlying role of values, and codes of professional ethics as well as the legal aspects. We mention specific topics, such as the the Ethically Aligned Design. Furthermore, we will present the perspective of the explainable AI systems (XAI) which have been widely discussed recently. Finally, we consider the requirements for the legal liability of intelligent systems.


Grzegorz J. Nalepa is an engineer with degrees in computer science - artificial intelligence, and philosophy. He has been working in the area of intelligent systems and knowledge engineering for over 15 years. He formulated the eXtended Tabular Trees rule representation method, as well as the Semantic Knowledge Engineering approach. He authored a book "Modeling with Rules using Semantic Knowledge Engineering" (Springer 2018). He co-edited a book "Synergies Between Knowledge Engineering and Software Engineering" (Springer 2018). He co-authored over 150 research papers in international conferences and journals. He coordinates GEIST - Group for Engineering of Intelligent Systems and Technologies (, and cooperates with AGH University and Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. He is a member of Polish Artificial Intelligence Society (PSSI), IEEE, Italian Artificial Intelligence Society (AI*IA) and KES. His recent interests include context-aware systems, affective computing and explainable AI. Recently he organised two editions of the AfCAI workhop on affective computing in Murcia (2016) and Valencia (2018), and the first edition of the XAILA workshop on explainable AI on the JURIX conference.
